The Chronicles of San Vicente

BACON DISTRICT, SORSOGON CITY

I. The Dawn of Leadership & Faith

The historical journey of Barangay San Vicente traces back to 1880, marked by the leadership of Calecsto Diaz, the community's first Cabesa de Barangay. In 1885, a defining moment occurred when a Spanish friar arrived with the images of two sacred saints: Saint Vincent Ferrer and Saint Anthony of Padua. With a unified heart, the community chose Saint Vincent Ferrer as their patron saint, and the barangay was subsequently honored and named after him.

II. The Legacy of the Sanctuary

In 1910, Lorenzo Dorol generously donated land for the first chapel, establishing himself as the first Hermano. However, in 1923, due to concerns over flooding at the original site, the community decided to find a safer haven. Through the benevolence of Vicente Desacula, a new piece of land was provided. To this day, the church and its beloved patron remain on the land gifted by the Desacula family, serving as the cornerstone of the community's spiritual life.

III. The Pursuit of Knowledge

Education in San Vicente began with the spirit of true Bayanihan. In 1941, residents united to build the first classroom so that their children would no longer have to walk to neighboring San Isidro. Under the leadership of Ms. Elena Deocampo and later Mrs. Josefina Lota, the school flourished. By 1950, it offered a complete elementary curriculum and celebrated its first graduating class in 1956.

💼 Economic Vitality

San Vicente is a land of abundance, thriving on agricultural products such as copra, root crops, and various fruits. The community is also renowned for its skilled artisans who weave mats and baskets from Karagumoy leaves. This economic foundation is further strengthened by dedicated professionals and overseas workers who continue to support their families and the local community.

IV. Culture, Tradition, & Values

The heart of San Vicente beats strongest every June 1st during its Patronal Fiesta. Rich traditions like the Santa Cruzan and Flores de Mayo are celebrated with immense pride. The community remains united through festive gatherings, sports competitions, and a deep, unwavering faith. Every Friday, devotees visit the church to offer candles and prayers, believing in the miraculous healing power of Saint Vincent Ferrer.
